Looking through old car ads, I found one for this Lexus IS (Toyota Altezza if you prefer captions to dubs) and it reminded me that Toyota has tried this “lets beat BMW on their own terms” deal before. Like then, The big L is trying to out perform the germans with some moderate successes in terms of the new IS and GS being highly reviewed. However, in the end, it just doesn’t matter if its a great car or not, cause its still a Lexus...
Granted, it being stupidly small didn’t help things, but I digress.

The IS was an amazing car. Too bad emissions killed any chance of there ever being a twin turbo VVTi model. I loved mine and so should you.

IS200’s only came with 150hp =(. Altezza RS200 is where it’s at, though! Although those were all 6-speed. Our IS300 was the only one to come with a 5-speed manual, no one else in the world got it.

Oh, I didn’t know they were 6 speed. Yeah, I’m talking blacktop beams 200+ hp.

Sorry, I’m a pedantic/obsessive IS/Altezza nerd. I would have had a 3SGE if I didn’t live in California.
I did have a 5-speed IS300 with a factory LSD, though, so I had that going for me, which is nice.

The idea is that, if they make enough great Lexuses, Lexus will become a brand worth owning. They started out strong with the initial LS, things tapered off after that.
It takes time to build an image, but that doesn’t mean the whole brand is inherently doomed.

I like Lexus generally, I just think they don’t have the rabid fans of the Bavarians

I agree. But I think if they made good cars at good value for long enough, they might have. There are those that swear the Lexus LS (much like the VW Phaeton) is a class above just about anything ever built. But they couldn’t keep it up.
Unfortunately for them, Merc and BMW do a pretty good job of keeping the fire going.
